Paddlers Hermie Macaranas & Alex Generalo Set for SEA Games Action

PHILIPPINES UPDATED. Philippine national men’s canoeing athletes, Hermie Macaranas and Alex Generalo are all set to show their strengths in the 27th Southeast Asian Games in Ngalike Dam, Nay Pyi Taw, Myanmar.

Both paddlers maybe newbies but Macaranas and Generalo are determined to make an immediate impact when they wade into battle in the canoeing competitions.

SEA Games debutante Macaranas makes his debut today and shoots for the gold in the Men’s C1 1000m Canoeing event at 9:00am. He is also entered in the C1 men’s 200m and 500m; while Alex Generalo figures in the K1 men’s 200m in only his second SEA Games campaign.

After a stunning performance in the Philippine National Games earlier this year, Macaranas and Generalo qualified as token delegates in this competition, which is expected to be heavily dominated by the host country.

The organizers jacked up the number of events to 16, giving the host athletes a handsome chance of making a serious bid for the overall crown.

“They may have all the advantages, but they cannot discount our determination and will to win,” said Filipino canoeing coach Christian Abejar.

“Our hard work in training should compensate for our lack of experience. We’ve already seen our opponents and all I can say is that we can easily beat them. I believe in my athletes. I know they can pull off a surprise.”

Abejar said part of their massive preparation is an exposure trip here not only to scout the opposition, but also to be familiar with the course.

“We’re ready,” he said. “We will show our country that winning the gold requires hard work and determination. We want to serve as an inspiration to other athletes.”
