PHILIPPINES UPDATED. After a successful two gold, three silver and 1 bronze medal haul yesterday, Team Philippines will shoot for four gold medals today at the 27th Southeast Asian Games in Myanmar.
First to take the plunge for the gold medal action today is wushu artist Daniel Parantac, who currently leads the scoreboard in the Men’s Taijiquan + Taijijian event.
Parantac scored 9.7 in his Taijiquan routine last Saturday, to Myanmar’s Chan Ko Ko Nyein 9.67 and Indonesia’s Mardan Tangdilallo Marthen 9.66 points. Singapore’s Yuan Lee Tze and another Indonesian artist Fredy also scored 9.65 and 9.64 (taking the 4th and 5th spot).
All five will battle for the gold medal in the Men’s Taijiquan + Taijijian event 9:00am today, where they will perform their Taijijian routine. Total best scores in Taijiquan and Taijijian events wins the gold medal.
Wushu artists Kariaza Kris Chan and Natasha Enriquez are also set to vie for the gold in the Women’s Duilian barehand hand event at around 10:00am. The duo won the bronze medal of the same event last 2011 SEA Games in Indonesia, and are now eyeing to improve their performance and hopefully clinch another gold for the wushu team.
Also seeing action for the gold early morning of today is SEA Games debutante Hermie Macaranas in the Men’s C1 1000m Canoeing finals. This event is expected to be dominated by the host country, but the newbie Macaranas might pull of a surprise.
Philippines last hunt for gold today lies on the shoulder of SEA Games defending champion Jason Balabal.
Balabal, Philippines’ flag-bearer this year, will defend his Greco-Roman 84kg title at 5:00pm today.
Other Filipino athletes seeing in the early rounds of competition today are from Pencak Silak, men’s and women’s basketball, boxing, and women’s football.
Equestrian offers two gold medals today, in the individual and team endurance events, but no news yet if Philippines has entries in both events.
