Singapore’s coach Beow Leng Sng said that all the archers here are having problems to hit the bullseye because of the unpredictable wind conditions.
“It is not only very windy in Naypyitaw but the direction of the wind also keeps changing. If the wind is in one direction the archers can get used to it. But when the wind conditions change direction it will pose a challenge to archers to get desirable scores,” said Leng Sng.
The 48-year-old former international archer, who is based in the United States, said that the Singaporean team arrived here on Sunday to get used to the unpredictable wind conditions.
Singapore have entered seven archers comprising of two men and five women in archery, which begins on Friday.
And Leng Sng, who has been coaching the Juniors in Washington D.C. for the last three years, said that the Singapore Archery Association had requested her to train the SEA Games athletes for six months.
“I am happy to train the national archers but we are not expecting to win the gold.
“Singapore have never won the gold in archery since the sport was included in the Games more than two decades ago,” said Leng Sng.
“Our archers are not full-time athletes like those in other countries in the region. We will be more than happy if we can win silver or bronze in the recurve and compound events.
“Countries like Indonesia, Malaysia and hosts Myanmar have good archers and they are expected to win the lion’s share of golds in the competition,” said Leng Sng, who featured in three SEA Games – in 1991 (Singapore), 1993 (Manila) and 1995 (Chiang Mai).
Ten golds are at stake in archery.
