Nerlyn Huinda Advance to Pencak Silat Semi in SEA Games

PHILIPPINESS UPDATED. Veteran international silat fighter Nerlyn Huinda overpowered her rival today and advance to the semifinal round of the women’s 60 kg pencak silat event at the 27th Southeast Asian Games in Zayar Theri Indoor Stadium C, Nay Pyi Taw, Myanmar.

Huinda, who won the Bronze medal in the same category last 2011 SEA Games in Indonesia, beat Siti Shazareena Hanifa of Brunei, 5-0 this afternoon. She is now assured of a replicating her previous SEA Games performance.

But a tougher bout awaits Huinda as she fights Indonesia’s Wehey Wita in the semifinal round for a chance to advance to the gold medal match.

Not so lucky today is her teammate Jayrashley Kiram who was beaten by Singaporean Muhammad Juanda, 0-5 in the quarterfinal round of the men’s 85 kg event.

SEA Games 2011 silver medalist, Jul Omar Abdulhakim, was also beaten yesterday in the men’s 55 kg quarterfinal round by Muhamad Helmi Abd Aziz of Malaysia.

As all men silat fighters already lost in the quarterfinal round, the Philippines’ campaign in Pencak Silat now lies in the shoulders of the women silat fighters.

Clyde Joy Baria who is entered in the women’s 75kg event had a bye in the quarterfinal round, and is slated to face Mariati of Indonesia in the semifinal round.

Philippine national Pencak Silat team is now assured of two bronze medals, as Huinda and Barja hurdle their semifinal opponents in the following days.

In the 2011 SEA Games, Philippine Pencak Silat team won 1 silver and 3 bronze medals.
