This is a SEA Games 2013 news update as of Saturday morning Dec 14: Myanmar continues to lead the medal tally with 26 gold, followed by Vietnam with 22 gold. Indonesia and Thailand both have 21 gold, Malaysia 10, Singapore 8, Cambodia 4, Philippines 3, Laos 2, Brunei 1, and Timor Leste 0.
Here are some of the highlights of Friday’s competition:
In basketball, Singapore easily defeated Cambodia 99-43, pulling away after a 16-14 first quarter.
The Philippines continued to dominate and looks like the class of the Games so far, beating Thailand 100-68.
In women’s basketball, Malaysia blew away Indonesia 81-48.
In weightlifting, Vietnam’s Tuan Thach Kim took the gold medal with a SEA Games record-breaking performance. Jadi Setiadi of Indonesia got the silver, and Myanmar’s Pyae Phyo the bronze.
In women’s weightlifting, Indonesia’s Sri Wahyuni won the gold, Thailand’s Panida Khamsri the silver, and Vietnam’s Hoai Do Thi Thu the bronze.
At the Wunna Theikdi Swimming Pool, Thailand, while not necessarily completely dominating the top step, owned most of the podium on Friday, winning a host of silvers and bronzes, as well as four of six gold medals.
In swimming, Thailand won four gold medals, and also a host of silvers and bronze. The Thais’ gold wins included the women’s 4×100 free, men’s 100 breaststroke, and the women’s 400m free.
Singapore’s Joseph Schooling set a meet record in the men’s 200m individual medley for the gold. Malaysia took gold in the women’s 100m breast, and Indonesia won the gold in the men’s 100m free with a meet record.
In chess, Myanmar’s team won gold in women’s traditional rapid chess. Thailand took the snooker doubles gold.
In wrestling, gold medals were won by Indonesia in men’s 84kg freestyle, by Cambodia in women’s 44kg freestyle, by Laos in men’s 96kg, by Vietnam in men’s 74kg, and by Vietnam in women’s 48kg.
In volleyball, Myanmar beat Malaysia 3-0 in women’s action, Thailand’s men defeated Malaysia 3-0, and Myanmar’s men beat Cambodia 3-0.
In shooting, Chew Eddy of Malaysia won the gold.
In sepak takraw, men’s action saw Indonesia beat Malaysia 2-1, and Thailand blank Myanmar 3-0. In women’s, Thailand beat Myanmar 3-0.
In hockey, Singapore’s women beat Indonesia 2-1, while Thailand easily defeated Cambodia 26-0.
In Equestrian, Indonesia won the gold in team dressage.
In karatedo, Vietnam’s Nguyen Hoang Ngan won the gold.
In cycling, Thailand’s Chawchiangkwang Peerapol won the gold in men’s mountain bike cross-country, while Indonesia’s Yazid Kusmawati took gold in the women’s race.
In canoeing, Thailand had a great day with their canoeists and kayakers winning almost all the golds. The Thais won golds in men’s C1 200m, men’s K1 200m, men’s 500m K1, and the men’s C2 200m.
Indonesia took gold in women’s K1 200m, and Singapore won gold in women’s K2.
