Indonesia clinched Gold in the team dressage category for Equestrian after amassing 205.929 points, ahead of the team from Myanmar (197.309) and Singapore (190.551). Six four-man teams participated in the event while borrowed horses were chosen by casting lots.
The Thai King's grand daughter, Princess Sirivannavari Nariratana, was among the equestrian competitors on Friday. Riding a Myanmar horse called Htate Kwet, she collected 63.069 points and ranked ninth in the individual event. The Equestrian event was also graced by the presence of Myanmar’s opposition leader Aung San Suu Kyi, who was reportedly there to watch her own horse - named Myanma A-Hla, or "the beauty of Myanmar" - perform.
Boxing
Indonesia’s Konelis Kwangu Langu (above) battered his Laos opponent Bounpone Lasavonesy in the Light Fly (46-49kg) semi-final to set up a final date with fellow semi-final winner Mark Anthony Barriga of the Philippines.
In the Bantam (56kg) category, Thai boxer Donchai Thathi overpowered Singapore’s Muhammad Solihin Nordin in the first round, while fellow Singaporean boxer Muhamad Ridhwan Ahmad fared little better in the semi-final for the Light (60kg) category, falling to Junel Cantancio of Philippines despite putting up a brave fight as both were made to settle for a bronze medal.
Badminton
Indonesia's Bellaetrix Manuputty dispatched her Thai rival Nitchaon Jundapon 21-17, 20-22, 22-20 to enter the final of the Women’s Singles in Indonesia’s quest for a yet another gold medal in Badminton. Bellaetrix’s male counterpart Wisnu Yuli Prasetyo could not replicate her feat as his dreams of a Gold Medal in the men’s singles vanished after he succumbed to Thailand’s Tanongsak Saensomboonsuk 21-17, 11-21, 12-21 in the Men’s Single’s semi-final.
In the Women’s Doubles semi-final, Malaysia’s Vivian Hoo Kah Mun and Woon Khe Wei set up an exciting final with Indonesia’s Polii Greysia andKrishinda Maheswari Nitya after overcoming Singapore shuttlers Shinta Mulia Sari and Yao Lei 23-21, 17-21, 21-17 for a place in the final, as the Singapore pair had to make do with bronze.
Football
In football, defending champions Malaysia trounced Laos 4-1 in the day’s earlier Group A fixture. A hat-trick by Ahmad Hazwan bin Bakri inspired the Tigers to their second 3 points of the campaign and maintained their 100 percent record ahead of a showdown with Vietnam.
Singapore remained top of the group following a 2-0 victory against Brunei, to keep them a point ahead of Malaysia, albeit having played a game more.
Skipper Hariss Harun’s strike calmed early Singapore nerves, before a fortuitous second goal by Sahil Suhaimi sealed the 3 points for the Lions. The goal was also Sahil’s third of the competition to make him Singapore’s top scorer at these Games.
Singapore meets Malaysia this Sunday in the clash of the top of Group A, with both teams eyeing a berth in the final four.
Swimming
While Thailand were the big winners at the Wunna Theikdi Swimming Poool on Friday, Indonesia made its mark in the men’s 100m freestyle. Sidiq Triady Fauzl took home the gold and set a new meet record with 49.99 sec, just half a second ahead of silver winning Hoang Quy Phuoc of Vietnam.
Singapore’s Danny Yeo clocked 50.83 sec to join Sidiq and Hoang on the podium.
Thailand clinched four out of six gold medals and added a host of silvers and bronzes to its haul, ending the day with the most number of podium finishes. The highlight of the swimming finals for the day was the women’s 4x100m freestyle, as the Thai girls swam home with the gold in 3 mins 47.66 sec, leaving Team Singapore (3:49.00) who had led initially with silver, and Indonesia (3:55.28) taking home the bronze.
Singapore was unable to replicate their successful medal haul in the event on Thursday, with star swimmer Joseph Schooling taking home the only Gold of the night, setting a new meet record of 2:00.82 in the men’s 200m individual medley for gold, leaving Vietnam’s 2.99 trailing in second for silver and Ketin Nttapong of Thailand settling for bronze.
Malaysia’s Christina Loh Yen Ling’s 1:10.55 sec was enough to help her take home the gold for the women’s 100m breaststroke, as she finished ahead of strong competition from Thai duo Salubluek Chavunnooch and Pawapotako Phiangkhwan.
