5,000 Signed Up to be Volunteers for 28th SEA Games 2015

More than 1,000 people registered their interest to be volunteers for the 28th SEA Games 2015 at the Singapore SEA Games Organising Committee’s (SINGSOC) very first volunteering event of the year. This brings the total number of sign-ups to almost 5,000 since SINGSOC began its search for volunteers last year.

SINGSOC’s aim to engage the community started the New Year with a bang on January 5, 2015 at the NTUC building located at 1 Marina Boulevard.

More than 1,000 participants were briefed on the volunteer programme for the 28th SEA Games, which will be held from June 5 – 16, 2015. Attendees were then divided according to the roles they were interested in and had the opportunity to meet and interact with relevant SINGSOC representatives.

Roles include web journalists, media relations volunteers and photographers and several other positions in Community Engagement, Finance, Marketing and Sponsorship. Refer to volunteer roles and responsibilities for the full list of roles available.

SINGSOC Executive Committee (EXCO) Chairman Lim Teck Yin, who is also the CEO for Singapore Sports Council, thanked the crowd in his welcome speech and said he was very heartened to see so many who wanted to be part of the SEA Games 2015 journey.

"The Games is what the organising committee conceptualises and plans, but we can only co-create it with your hands and your heart. I thank you all from the bottom of my heart," he said.

Amongst those who signed up were 16-year-old CHIJ St Nicholas Girls School students, Gwyneth Ang Xin Yi and Lee Liying. Miss Ang said she registered because she did not want to miss the opportunity to be part of a regional sporting event.

"Besides giving back to Singapore, I will also be able to meet and interact with others from diverse backgrounds and different cultures," said Ms Lee.

Ms Lee's passion for volunteering is shared by Wendy Kok Yin Mui, 51-year-old volunteer leader with the Singapore Sports Council.

Ms Kok, who was volunteering at the event's registration counter on Sunday, has been helping in various sporting events since 2009. This includes the Asian Youth Games in 2009 and the Youth Olympic Games in 2010.

She said volunteering gives her the opportunity to give back to society, help people and make them happy. She urged those considering volunteering to sign up for the SEA Games 2015 if they share the same passion.
