Thais Surge Ahead of Myanmar in Medals Ahead of Football Game

MYANMAR UPDATED. Thailand surged ahead of Myanmar in the SEA Games 2013 medals standings today just before the two countries met in a huge men’s football match on Saturday night.
 

Myanmar has led the medal tally since the beginning of the competition, but Thailand stormed ahead today and is in first place at the moment with a total of 33 golds, compared to second-place Myanmar’s 31. Indonesia is third with 30 and Vietnam fourth with 29.

In the early men’s football match, Indonesia and Timor Leste played to a 0-0 draw.

Thailand and Myanmar are at the top of the Group B standings, with both teams having won their first two matches of the tournament.

By 5am this morning hundreds of die-hard fans were at the stadium in anticipation of the much-anticipated match. The numbers of fans had grown into the thousands by 10am, hoping to buy the last batch of tickets being offered today.

The stadium was absolutely packed three hours before the start of the match, with fans on both sides decked out in their teams’ colours and eager for the crucial match to begin.

Security officials estimated up to 100,000 fans could make their way to the stadium today.

The match is now underway, and reports say it is tied at 1-1. Myanmar scored first in the 33rd minute on a back header from Nay Lin Tun, but Thailand has scored the equalizer to tie the score at 1-1.
