SEA Games Provide Additional Income For Ordinary Myanmars

MYANMAR UPDATED. The 27th SEA Games in Myanmar will not only boost the country's economy but will also increase the income of the people, especially in Nyapyitaw, Yangon, Mandalay and Ngwe Saung, the venues for 33 events of the Games.
The influx of SEA Games athletes, officials, volunteers, spectators and media practitioners for the biennial sporting event from Dec 11 to 22 will definitely provide ordinary Myanmars with substantial additional income.

It is observed that they have grabbed the opportunity to sell a lot of stuff, from handicrafts, knick-knacks, 27th SEA Games souvenirs to food, or provide transport services to the visitors.
Limited public transport services have opened up opportunities for local residents here who can speak Malay and English to offer the services to foreign media practitioners, including from Malaysia, covering the Games.
A private car driver who speaks fluent Malay, Aung Myo Lin said the arrival of foreign journalists, especially from Malaysia, Brunei, Singapore and Indonesia requiring the service had enabled him to earn extra income daily since last week by ferrying the visitors to the Games venues.
Aung, who had experienced working at a shoe factory in Johor for three years, said be preferred to take Malaysian visitors around as he found them to be more friendly and generous.
He said for the duration of the SEA Games, he chose to work 12 hours a day to earn as much money from the opportunity presented by this important sporting event.
A worker known as Kay at a restaurant serving Thai cuisine said although a salaried worker, he could earn extra when asked by his boss to do overtime due to receiving many more customers this time.
"I am so happy because I can meet many people and my boss gives me more money," he said.
