Five Reasons Why The 28th SEA Games is Important to You

The region's biggest multi-sports event is heading to Singapore's shores in June 2015. Sports fan or not, here is why you should sit up and take notice!

1) Experience the Kallang Roar again

The Kallang Roar was more than just local fans cheering for the national football team, it was, in the words of former Football Association Singapore Chairman Nadesan Ganesan, "an unprecedented mantra that united Singaporeans".

Former national footballer Quah Kim Song once said: "Every time when we trooped out into the National Stadium, you can get this Kallang roar... the fans cheering us, it was full house... That kind of feeling, I think I cannot describe."

Now it's your turn to experience the Kallang Roar when Singapore's football team take on regional rivals at the 28th SEA Games. Whether you're Singaporean or not, the Kallang Roar is one reason you should definitely be at the Games.

2) Catch legends in the making

The SEA Games has long been a platform for regional talent to shine. Take Singapore's legendary sprinter Canagasabai Kunalan (right) for example. He won a medal in every SEA Games from 1967 to 1977, except for 1971. In total he picked up nine medals at the SEA Games, four of which were Gold.

The late Datuk Punch Gunalan was another athlete who excelled at the Games. One of Malaysia's best badminton players, Datuk Gunalan made his mark when he won the singles, doubles, and mixed doubles events in the Negeri Sembilan Badminton Championship from 1961-1963. A legend in the badminton field, he won numerous Gold awards in the 1969, 1971 and 1973 SEAP Games.

Famous for his 8-time championships in the All England tournament, Rudy Hartono, an Indonesian badminton player, also dominated the badminton scene from the 1960s to the 1980s. As Indonesia’s star player, he competed in the SEA Games in the 1980s through the 1990s, contributing to a grand total of 103 Gold medals by the Indonesian badminton players.

3) The Singapore Sports Hub, an extraordinary venue

Among the many sporting venues the SEA Games will be held at in Singapore, the most exciting is without a doubt the Singapore Sports Hub. Take the opportunity to experience the exciting regional clashes in the newest addition to Singapore's sporting landscape.

The 55,000-seat National Stadium with a retractable roof, moveable seating tiers, air-cooling to all spectator seats and a 6,000-seat Aquatics Centre & Leisure Water facility are just some of the many world-class facilities the Hub has to offer.

Make a date with the Singapore Sports Hub this SEA Games.

4) It is close to home

The SEA Games returns to Singapore after 22 long years, which means you are just minutes away from the region's best live sporting action.

If you are travelling into Singapore from around the region, you can get up close to the action in just a few hours flight, road or even rail. Come on down and not only enjoy the sporting action but also immerse yourself in the many attractions Singapore has to offer.

 5) It’s been 22 years - the wait is finally over!

Singapore last hosted the games in 1993 and is ready to host it again in 2015. There are numerous opportunities to get involved in the preparations and the duration of the Games. You can volunteer or take part in a slew of community activities that will be begin later this year.
