The National Sports Council (NSC) has urged the Malaysian Athletics Union (MAU) to review their decision and include senior athletes Noraseela Mohd Khalid and Lee Hup Wei in the Myanmar SEA Games athletics squad.
NSC director-general Datuk Seri Zolkples Embong said Noraseela, the National women's 400m hurdler and men's high jump ace Hup Wei, should be given a chance in the athletics squad.
"Although they failed to qualify on merit, Noraseela and Hup Wei have a track record of achievements throughout the year. They have proven themselves in the past by winning medals for the country," he told reporters, today.
Zolkples said the MAU should consider the NSC's views since the NSC has channeled funds to the MAU for the preparation of athletes.
He said Hup Wei should have been included in the SEA Games squad since he still holds the National High Jump record of 2.27m which was set in the China Open Athletics Championships in 2008.
"I am confident with Hup Wei's capability and believe he can still contribute a medal and he is still not old compared to some other athletes," he said.
Zolkples also questioned the MAU's decision to list an inexperienced jumper as the country's second choice to the Myanmar games.
"I was made to understand that the MAU had also listed athletes who did not participate in the Malaysian Open which ended on Sunday, in the list of athletes to Myanmar...there are also less known names in the list," he said.
He also questioned MAU's decision to omit Noraseela's name although she can be a part of the 4x400m relay team and the fact that she had sacrificed her time and own money to undergo training.
Zolkples said he would meet the MAU to discuss the issue.
